Across earth, in silence, the awakened wait…

K315 is based on an original poem by Bréon Rydell, ‘Spoken Words/Broken Swords.’ Many of the poem’s themes have been incorporated within the Opera.
Scenes from Act 1: Haukadalur, Iceland.

Scottish physicist Ed Struthers, is conducting research at Asteria base in Iceland. His teenage children, are out exploring the valley when they meet by chance a mysterious traveller. Secrets are revealed about what is really happening on planet earth. Global threats are being imposed by powerful authoritarian forces that are gaining momentum. This knowledge places the children in great danger. As they continue their walk, they are confronted by a swirling storm that envelops them in a strange dust.

Out in the cosmos, deep within an embryonic wilderness – a voice whispers: “Wake up… It is time…”

I journeyed to a yard of graves
Where words were written on stone
Of a man who roamed this earth and suffered centuries ago
I laid upon the ancient slab and fell into a darkened sleep
My mind and body rested whilst a whisper came to me…

All the time asking questions and changing minds
Through the ages men’s hands have met
First in friendship and next in death

Does anybody out there know if spoken words have broken swords?
Does anybody out there know if spoken words have broken swords?

He spoke about our troubled land, and said ‘My child you must beware
there are many dangers in your life, you will know when they are there
From nature you will get the sign, a light will travel through your sky
A circle of stone, the sound of a horn, it will answer, reason, why…

‘I give to you a sacred force, as you are now as once was I
The test of blindness taught you that the truth is in the eye
A fire burns by your side that warms and glows with time
As one you will unite, and open doors to waiting minds…’

Symbolism and hidden meanings within this poem:
“FROM NATURE YOU WILL GET THE SIGN” – nature has repeatedly given us warning signs, but we have sat back and done very little. Human self-interest is in danger of pushing life on planet earth toward mass extinction, and time is no longer on the side of nature. A drastic shift in strategy is needed, to counteract the vested interests that are ruthless in their destruction of the natural world and all living things. It is a clarion call for collective action.

Close encounter croppedAn allusion to the destructive consequences of asteroid impacts on earth, an extra-terrestrial event, or a terresterial nuclear war, and how to avert these potential catastrophes. At the same time, this also refers to the development of interplanetary travel, where humans will go forward and introduce new life on other planets.

“A CIRCLE OF STONE” – symbolises our transient place in the scheme of things and species fragility. Many ancient civilisations have disappeared, but have left traces of their culture in ‘circles of stone.’ For example, Globekli Tepe in Turkey, which pre-dates Stonehenge in Southern England by 6000 years, and the Inca mountain citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru.

“THE SOUND OF HORN” – the call to young receptive minds and all who are awakened, to defend the natural world and the planet as a whole. It is a time of great upheaval, danger, resistance, and conflict.

“WILL ANSWER REASON WHY” – increase the understanding of abstract concepts, such as existence and consciousness. Escape from the limitations of rigid and imprisoned thinking. For the human species to advance and survive on earth and to explore new vistas in the cosmos, paradigm shifts in both natural and artificial intelligence will be required. Checks and balances need to be in place to ensure that individual freedom is never jeopardised.

“I GIVE TO YOU A SACRED FORCE AS YOU ARE NOW AS ONCE WAS I ” – this force is multi-dimensional: Intelligence – the fount of all knowledge; The gift of life; Emergent complex fields of energy within time-space.

The traveller views the qualities mentioned above as sacred, to be valued and treasured. ‘Knowledge and wisdom’ also implies ‘power’ in a positive sense, as opposed to ‘ignorance,’ and fear, which is at the basis of so much hatred and intolerance. Possession of knowledge and wisdom in the right hands, reflected in an enlightened system of government, can be powerful forces for good.

“THE TEST OF BLINDNESS TAUGHT YOU THAT THE TRUTH IS IN THE EYE” – don’t take what you see at face value, the importance of critical thinking – to question your perception, and take on board that your brain’s processing of an external image, can give rise to a false interpretation. Consider other possibilities – the concepts of intuative intelligence, different perspectives and multiple truths.

“A FIRE BURNS BY YOUR SIDE WHICH WARMS AND GLOWS WITH TIME” Starman– Emergence, a symbol of re-birth. The stewards and guardians of the entire planet, uniting to form a community of resistance to the destructive forces of apocalyptic cults and unbridled, totalitarian, powers. A build-up of awareness and an end to passivity – the beginning of the battle in earnest for the future of the planet and the freedom and survival of a just, stable, global community.

“AS ONE YOU WILL UNITE AND OPEN DOORS TO WAITING MINDS” – WORKING TOGETHER TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT, an expression of hope, that by expanding the knoweldge-base of the protagonists of the Opera, and their acceptance of the quest placed upon their shoulders, they will help to inspire like-minded people seeking to learn from humanity’s mistakes. Having recognised those mistakes, new institutions and political systems will hopefully emerge to create a more advanced society that will protect, rather than exploit, the natural world.

[From a lecture by Dr. Alexander Volkov]

Museum of Tolerance, Moscow. ‘A state of the Art 21st Century Facility.’ Dr. Volkov, takes the assembled audience of dignitaries, which includes the President of Russia, on a time-space journey through Earth’s recent history.

“Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love.” ― William Shakespeare, Hamlet.

Saturn in Natural Colours“We inhabit a universe where atoms are made in the centers of stars; where each second a thousand suns are born; where life is sparked by sunlight and lightning in the airs and waters of youthful planets; where the raw material for biological evolution is sometimes made by the explosion of a star halfway across the Milky Way; where a thing as beautiful as a galaxy is formed a hundred billion times – a Cosmos of quasars, quarks, snowflakes and fireflies, where there may be black holes, other universes and extraterrestrial civilizations whose radio messages are at this moment reaching the Earth…

In the fabric of space and in the nature of matter, as in a great work of art, there is, written small, the artist’s signature. Standing over humans, gods, and demons, subsuming caretakers and tunnel builders, there is an intelligence that antedates the universe.

Our intelligence and our technology have given us the power to affect the climate. How will we use this power? Are we willing to tolerate ignorance and complacency in matters that affect the entire human family? Do we value short-term advantages above the welfare of the Earth? Or will we think on longer time scales, with concern for our children and our grandchildren, to understand and protect the complex life-support systems of our planet? The Earth is a tiny and fragile world. It needs to be cherished… ” – Carl Sagan, 1980.
